Lonnie Spivak Campaign for US House, TN-05 Releases Campaign Video

Lonnie Spivak, 5th District Congressional Candidate,
Releases First Commercial.

Nashville, TN – May 10, 2010 - Lonnie Spivak, Republican candidate for the Congressional 5th District in Nashville has just released his first campaign commercial online via YouTube and his campaign website voteforlonnie.com.

“I’m proud to have this commercial available for everyone to see. It not only gets my campaign message out there, it also celebrates the hard work of my staff and volunteers. For their efforts over the last several months, I owe each of them my heartfelt gratitude,” Spivak said.

A native Nashvillian, Spivak grew up in Bellevue and attended public schools in the Hillwood cluster. His involvement with local conservative groups such as Tea Party Nation, Tennessee Tea Party, Sumner United for Responsible Government, 9.12 Project Group and ACT! for America, has been instrumental in his decision to serve in public office. A local small business owner, Lonnie is married with two daughters, and is active in the community, supporting several charities including the T.J. Martell Foundation, which funds critical research in cancer, leukemia and AIDS.

Spivak’s conservative platform includes smaller government, lower taxes, congressional term limits and tort reform. He is opposed to cap and trade, a single-payer healthcare system and amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Government Controls Everything but Our Borders

government-controls-everything-but-our-borders

In the last year and a half, we Americans have seen a flurry of activity in the government. The current administration and a majority of congress apparently believe that when it comes to government, “the bigger the better.” As a result, we have seen the government takeover of two car manufacturers, student loans, and our health insurance.

They didn’t stop there, though. They have proposed new legislation that will co-opt Wall Street and our banking industry, control how much electricity a company can use as a part of their business, dictate how energy efficient your home must be before it can be sold, define how much water can be used to irrigate our crops – the list goes on and on. In fact, the website regulations.gov lists 229 pages of new regulations enacted in just the last 30 days! It seems that our government is willing to regulate everything but our borders.

Constitutionally speaking, the federal government is charged with preserving the security of the nation against all enemies, both foreign and domestic. With the resurgence of illegal immigration coming from our southern border, however, our government is failing its citizens and ignoring the purpose for which they were elected.

In times of plenty, the burden of illegal immigration on the states is immense. The unfunded liability of Medicaid and other social programs has been a tremendous financial burden to those who are law-abiding legal residents of this country. In tough economic times, this burden is unsustainable. As a result, states across the country are on the verge of bankruptcy, and legal residents are having to compete for work with a group of people who pay no taxes and send a good part of their wages back to their native countries.

The failure of our federal government to protect the sovereignty of the United States is, unfortunately, not a new one.”Amnesty for Illegals” is a trend that needs to stop! The first step is we need to start enforcing our current immigration laws. Give border states the tools they need to protect their people! It’s time to stop tip-toeing around the national security issues associated with having an unsecured border.

Last week, the people of Arizona finally took matters into their own hands. Facing kidnappings, increasing violence from Mexican drug cartels and a never-ending flood of illegals, their legislature could no longer wait for the federal government to live up to their constitutional responsibility. All they did is pass the nation’s toughest immigration laws. This bill contains many provisions, all of which make it tougher for people in the United States illegally to work and live in their state. Sometimes this is the price we must pay for freedom. I hope Arizona’s Republican governor, Jan Brewer, will sign this bill in to law and that other states follow their lead.

IT IS TIME TO TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK!!! We the People, working together as a Nation, are going to have to start pushing back against this government expansion and demand more from our elected representatives. We the People, together must reaffirm our belief in our Constitutional, Representative Republic that follows the blueprint given to us by our Founding Fathers. We the People, together must secure our borders and shrink the size and influence of government in our daily lives. These efforts, along with tax-cuts for small businesses and families, will put our country back on the right path and create private sector jobs to get Americans back to work. Then we can start tackling our biggest problem – the national debt.

Rough Waters Ahead: Feds Foul Up Another Insurance Program

rough-waters-ahead-feds-foul-up-another-insurance-program

Now that the healthcare bill has officially become law, there are many questions being raised about whether or not the federal government has the capacity and the knowledge to run and administer an insurance program of this magnitude. This law literally effects every man, woman and child in the United States.

In addition to the new health insurance program and Medicare, there is yet another national insurance program run by the federal government – the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). As Congress congratulated itself for passing the healthcare bill and headed out of town on recess, our legislative branch neglected to take care of this insurance program that they were already running. Given that authorization for NFIP lapsed at midnight on Sunday, March 28th, this action – or inaction, as one might say – does not exactly engender faith that they will be any more responsible with the healthcare system in our country.

A fact probably known only to those who live in a flood plain: all flood insurance is provided by the federal government through your local insurance agent. The National Flood Insurance Program was established in 1968, and later made mandatory in Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs) in 1973. The Act was amended once again in 2004, when Congress put a two-claim limit on flood insurance policies. According to a memo released by FEMA, “NFIP will not be able to: (a) issue new policies, (b) increase coverage on existing policies, or (c) issue renewal policies.” What this means is that, if you are scheduled to close on a house or any other type property located in a flood plain during this hiatus, your bank will be forced to delay your closing until Congress restores the program. We know that this will not happen until they reconvene on April 12, 2010. Once they are in session, it is difficult to know when the Senate will take up the matter. For certain, nothing will get done anytime soon.

Another stall in the housing market is not what we need to help our economy recover – especially since that return to balance is partially driven by the real estate market. If you are paddling a canoe in your front yard in Connecticut or Rhode Island this week, and your policy was up for renewal this week, you are probably wondering what is going to happen to you. To put that into perspective, you accidental canoeists will be in a very similar boat under the new healthcare plan, when confronted with a medical condition in the years ahead.

While NFIP issue might not be getting a great deal of attention right now, it does illustrate Congressional ineffectiveness in managing mandated programs. Unfortunately, this can be interpreted as only a preview of what is to come in the months and years ahead of us. The government’s inability to act when it should, and act when it should not, will undoubtedly leave millions of Americans mired in layers of bureaucratic red tape – a situation which will haunt our new health insurance program as it now haunts the NFIP. Grab a paddle, people. Rough waters ahead.

Lonnie Spivak promises to work to repeal Obamacare

lonnie-spivak-promises-to-work-to-repeal-obamacare

Lonnie Spivak, Republican candidate for the Congressional 5th District in Nashville is working tirelessly to repeal the new healthcare legislation that is expected to be signed in to law later this week.

“I am disappointed that Congressman Jim Cooper (D-TN5) chose to vote lock-step with Speaker Nancy Pelosi in passing President Obama’s Healthcare legislation,” says Spivak. “As voters and taxpayers, we should hold Representative Cooper personally responsible for his role. This bill defrauds hard-working American People and will ultimately lead to a government run, single-payer system. I will continue to do everything within my power to make sure that this bill is de-funded and eventually repealed.”

Lonnie Spivak on “Taking the TownHalls to DC”

lonnie-spivak-on-taking-the-townhalls-to-dc

A campaign update from Lonnie Spivak for Congress:

For most of last week, I ran the war room for “Take the Townhalls to Washington” an event that kicked off in our nation’s capital Tuesday, March 9th, drawing Tea Party activists from throughout the country to Washington D.C. during the month of March. As a group, our goal is to meet, question and discuss the positions of approximately 50 members of the House of Representatives whose vote on the pending Healthcare legislation has not yet been publicly announced.

Defeating healthcare legislation and preventing it from becoming law is imperative – so much so, that I was more than willing to fly to D.C. and work with Rep. Michele Bachmann (video), Mark Skoda (event spokesperson) and Tea Party activists from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virgina and as far away as Fredericksburg, Texas. Over the course of three days, I spent 12 hours each day in a small room, directing volunteers and activists, coordinating with the media and focused on getting our message out effectively.

Last week, we introduced America to Dr. Milton Wolf, the Overland Park, Kansas radiologist who is Barack Obama’s second cousin, once removed. Dr. Wolf lives in Kansas and has come out against the government takeover of our healthcare system. (read his op-ed in the Washington Times Click Here).

Spivak in DCThe situation regarding healthcare legislation is constantly changing. Tensions are high in the House of Representatives and the fate of Obamacare is still uncertain. Our last count shows that Speaker Pelosi is seven votes short. We are confronting those representatives who still appear to be on the fence – and I invite everyone who shares my position on healthcare to contact their representative. Click here for a directory of contact numbers.

If you are interested in traveling to Washington and helping me stop the government takeover of healthcare, please e-mail me at lonnie@lonniespivak.com. Together, we can stop Obamacare. Visit the Washington D.C. Tea Party at: http://washingtondcteaparty.ning.com.

Spivak in DC for “Take the TownHalls to Washington” Event

spivak-in-dc-for-take-the-townhalls-to-washington-event

Lonnie Spivak’s campaign for TN-05 released the following today:

Today, I am assisting in the coordination of the “Take The Town Halls To Washington” event starting today. This project is designed to bring Tea Party activists to Washington, D.C. during the month of March. Our goal is to meet, question and discuss the positions of approximately 50 members’ of the House of Representatives whose vote on the pending Healthcare legislation has not yet been publicly announced.

The pending vote in the House would be the last vote to decide the fate of President Obama’s plan to nationalize our Healthcare system, as-well-as one-sixth of our economy.

Representatives Jim Cooper and Bart Gordon appear to be on the fence, and even though Rep. Gordon is no longer running for re-election, I believe he can still be swayed. If we can delay the vote until after the Easter break, I believe we can stop Obamacare for good.

Please call Rep. Jim Cooper (202-225-4311), and Rep. Bart Gordon (202-225-4231)
today and tell them to vote NO on the Senate plan.

Take the TownHalls to DC logoThe press-conference kicking-off this history-making event will take place Tuesday, March 9th from the Capitol Hill Suites in D.C. 6:30 pm CST. I am scheduled to speak alongside several other Tea Party Patriots, and we will not stop until our country is safe from this government takeover.

For further information, or to register and participate or assist others to come to Washington, D.C., please check out our website here (Twitter #th2dc).

The official press release can be found here.

Your support in this grass-roots campaign is the only way we can stop the radical left in Congress. Your contribution in any amount – whether $25, $100, $250 or $1,000 - will help us raise the money necessary to restore your faith in our government.

Spivak for Congress on the National Tea Party Convention

spivak-for-congress-on-the-national-tea-party-convention

Last week, Nashville became the center of the political universe and the host of the first-ever National Tea Party Convention at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. I was proud to consult with the convention committee for this history-making event.

The convention started last Thursday with media personalities from all over the world and people from across this great nation – many of whom I had an opportunity to meet. It was also a treat to hear so many exciting speakers! I particularly enjoyed Angela McGowan, a Fox News contributor and future congresswoman from Mississippi. Joseph Farah, founder, editor, and CEO of World Net Daily, delivered a hard-hitting and funny speech about the current state of our nation. Those were just a few of the speeches Saturday evening that greatly inspired me and capped off a very educational day.

The convention was a big boost to our campaign, with media appearances on NPR, WOR-710 AM in New York, KSLR 630 AM in San Antonio and WSMV television in Nashville. Be sure to visit my website later this week, as we will have digital copies of all the appearances for you to see and hear!

For me, the highlight of the week was my meeting with Governor Sarah Palin. I was impressed with her honesty and sincere well wishes for our campaign. During our brief discussion I walked away feeling   like I had just spoken with an old friend. Later, her keynote brought the sell-out crowd to their feet several times, and ended with chants of “Run Sarah! Run!” and “Sarah 2012.”

No matter who the Republican presidential nominee is for the 2012 election, it is important to get as many conservative voices in Washington as possible. I truly believe that once we have a conservative majority in Congress, we will be able to slow government growth and begin to get our spending under control. This is one of my biggest priorities once I am elected – I know that Tennesseans will expect nothing less.

As I travel around the district, what is echoed consistently is how frustrated each of you are with Representative Jim Cooper; how disappointed you are with his decision to vote along side Speaker Pelosi on TARP, the stimulus package, Cap and Trade, Cash for Clunkers and most of all, the Healthcare bill. Cooper has to be wondering if he can still convince Middle Tennesseans that he is still a “Conservative Democrat.” I am certain that he is starting to reassess his re-election chances.

Now that the momentum of this grass-roots movement has been established, I know that we can continue building on our early successes. We have won some early victories, but cannot rest until we have reached our goal of restoring our “Shining City on a Hill.”

I cannot thank the Tea Party Nation enough for allowing me to contribute to this successful and truly historic event, and look forward to consulting with them on their upcoming event later this year.

Thank you for your continued support as we fight to take back our great nation! Please take a minute to make a contribution of  $10, $20, $100 or more today so we can keep Conservatism on the Move in Tennessee’s Fifth District.
