My name is Pia Varma. I am a firm defender of free market capitalism, the economic system which best allows man to create, trade and prosper. I am twenty-seven years old. My grandfathers were both freedom fighters in the Indian Independence movement, so being a firebrand is in my genes! My parents grew up in England and came to the United States in the early 80’s, at a time when entrenched socialism had made living and thriving in the UK virtually impossible.

I am an American.

So why am I running for Congress?. The truth is I was never driven to politics. It seemed like a system of climbing ladders, making back-room dealing and glad-handing and I wanted no part of it. Ever since I was a child my ambition was to create stuff; building tree houses, painting pictures, writing songs. The possibilities of the world always felt endless. But as I watch my country struggle, I can no longer sit back and do nothing. I am determined to fight with all my might to put America back on track, even if it means entering the political system.

In my adolescence, like many other teens, I envisioned the perfect world, ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon was my favorite song and I dubbed myself Uto’pia’. I dreamed of a world of peace, love and prosperity… I still do, and now I have answers. I have studied and searched for explanations by reading every book I could find on politics, economics and history and seeking and engaging those who also seek the truth. I have championed individual rights, the right of people to prosper and to get big government off our backs.

When you look into my past you won’t find the perfect resume. You will see a person who has faced challenges, who has faced defeat and who has risen from the ashes to face another day. My life is, in fact, a collection of ‘Aha!’ moments and while I feel proud of my successes in many ways it is my failures that have taught me the most.

I have lived in Philadelphia and worked and tried hard to prosper in the First District. But I saw the hand of selfish, corrupt politicians destroying the hope of a business that would have created jobs, reduced crime and improved lives. I may have lost that battle but I promised to return and fight those whose only interests lie in enriching themselves at the expense of those they claim to represent. I am back in the First District to take the power away from those who have misused it.

I hope you join me.
